Man accused in deadly hit and run accident claims he thought he hit a deer

Corolla, NC – A driver is now behind bars after officials say he hit and killed a man in Corolla and left the scene.

The victim was a 21-year-old foreign exchange student from Bulgaria who was staying in the area. Police say he was walking north on Highway 12 when he was hit.

He has been identified as Afen Zahariev. Officials believe this accident occurred at around 11 p.m. on Monday night.

A newspaper delivery driver discovered Zahariev’s body the next morning at 6 a.m.

On Tuesday morning, the driver realized there was a hit and run in Corolla and turned himself in to authorities. He told them he fled the scene because he thought he hit a deer.

The driver has been identified as 37-year-old Peter Thomas Luke, Jr. and he is now in the Currituck County Jail.

He has been charged with felony hit and run and is under at $20,000 bond.
