The weeknight closures at the Gilmerton Bridge will continue until the project is scheduled for completion in early 2015, VDOT announced on Friday.
VDOT says the project is approximately 95 percent complete at this time but unforeseen events throughout the project have pushed the completion date back further.
The original completion date for the project was scheduled for winter 2014.
Crews continue to work on demolishing the old Gilmerton Bridge. Because of the bridge's proximity to the adjacent railroad bridge, they can only use mechanical means for demolition. The weeknight closures of the new bridge are required so that crews can use the large demolition equipment they need.
The Gilmerton Bridge continues to remain open during peak week-day commuting times and weekends. The bridge is closed during off-peak times, Sunday through Thursday, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Motorists are encouraged to use the High Rise Bridge as an alternate route or the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge as a tolled alternative route.
