Chesapeake parents fight to make sure “After Prom” party doesn’t end

Chesapeake, Va. - It's an after party after prom, where high school seniors can make the choice of playing games and winning door prizes, over getting into drugs or alcohol on prom night.

But the party at Chesapeake High Schools could soon be over as the principals are discussing cancelling the event and parents aren't happy with the idea.

"It`s the safety of our kids, I hate to get emotional about this but it`s what it`s comes down to," said Grassfield High School mom, Patty Lewis.  "There is going to be adult supervision and no alcohol and no drugs just pure fun, which is what they should be having before they go to college, it just frustrates me."

The emotions are high for many parents like Lewis because they tell NewsChannel 3 they heard the decision has already been made.

It was even posted on the official Great Bridge High School's Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) page.

"I heard that the vote was 5-2 between the principals of Chesapeake, it happened last night," Lewis added.

But school officials insist the parents are wrong.

A spokesperson for Chesapeake Public Schools in a statement wrote:

"There has not been any final decisions made to cancel After Prom. Discussions are taking place and principals are gathering information from parents, students and staff."

NewsChannel 3 asked school officials why they are discussing cancelling the event in the first place, and still have received no answer.

The idea alone, though, scares parents like Lewis. She says who knows what these seniors will get into on prom night if they don't have a safe place to go.

"Grassfield alone has over 400 kids. You have that many kids that are going to be finding hotel rooms and just places to go party its just silly, it`s just not safe ," Lewis said.

That's why Lewis is joining many parents in writing to school principals and to the superintendent.

If you want to take action to make sure "After Prom" isn't cancelled at your child's high school you can call or email the principal or superintendent.
