UPDATE: Susan Murphy's trial date has been set for December 2, 2014 at 11 a.m. in Suffolk.

Suffolk, Va. - A mother who admitted she was drinking and took prescription pills before she crashed her car with her child inside is expected in court today.

We're expecting to learn how Susan Murphy plans to plea on the child abuse charge. This comes weeks after police initially charged the mother with drinking and driving.

The Suffolk mother admitted to drinking alcohol and taking pills just hours before being involved in a car crash that seriously hurt her 11-year-old child, according to court documents.

Susan Murphy is expected to appear in court later this morning on child abuse charges after weeks of investigation by Suffolk police.

Back on July 25, officers responded to a car accident involving Murphy and her 11-year-old son in Suffolk.

Police say they smelled a strong odor of alcohol and Murphy told officers she took a vicodin shortly before the crash.

Court documents also reveal the mother failed three sobriety tests. She was charged with DUI and refusal to take a blood alcohol test in July.

But recently - investigators added the child abuse charges. Neighbors were surprised to learn about Murphy's arrest, since they never saw the mom drink or use drugs.
