Republican Ed Gillespie seized on allegations that Senator Mark Warner may have suggested a federal judgeship for the daughter of a democratic state senator. Democrats were trying to keep that senator from retiring and handing control of the senate to republicans.
The two sparred over Gillespie's career as a Washington lobbyist for failed energy giant Enron.
Gillespie denied Warner's claim that he had signed a formal pledge not to raise taxes circulated by republican activist Grover Norquist.
For his part, Gillespie accused Warner of being a rubber stamp for President Obama, especially on the unpopular subject of the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.
Both claimed they would better represent a state with a sharp democrat/republican divide.
Polls all show Mark Warner with a double-digit lead in this race. Ed Gillespie has three weeks to change voters’ minds and between now and Election Day both campaigns, and their wealthy supporters will bombard the airwaves with ads most people will simply say are negative attacks.
