Fort Dodge, Iowa — A man admited to going 30 miles over the speed limit as he sped by police early Tuesday morning, but had a very good excuse.

Police began to pursue a speeding SUV on Highway 7 near the town of Manson but the SUV would not stop.

The police finally caught up to the SUV after throwing out spikes and popping the tires. They ordered a couple out of the car and reportedly held them at gunpoint, according to WHOTV.

That’s when they realized the reason they were speeding.

Ben Kohnen was speeding to the hospital around 4 a.m. because his wife, Rachel, was in labor with their fourth child.

Kohnen admits that he was going about 30 miles over the speed limit when they passed the officer.

His wife told him the baby was coming and to not stop the car.

“I think I was screaming, ‘ Oh dear God, we can’t have the baby in the car,’” Rachel said.

The couple says they tried to call 911, but the dispatcher couldn’t understand Rachel in between her contractions.

After police realized it was a real emergency, the mother was rushed to the hospital where she delivered, Hazel, a healthy baby girl.

Manson Police Chief Tom Ritts says no charges have been filed.

The Chief says it’s a good idea to call ahead for help to avoid situations like this.
