The first element of the new Midtown Tunnel was fully lowered into place and connected to the Portsmouth side this week, Elizabeth River Tunnels has announced.
The 18-hour process was finished on Tuesday when they opened the doors of the 16,000-ton element for a thorough survey and inspection.
Element two is scheduled for placement in mid-November.
The remaining elements (11 total) will continue to be placed from the Portsmouth side moving eastward across the Elizabeth River at a rate of approximately one every five weeks.
The new tunnel is expected to be complete in December 2016.
