The 18-hour process was finished on Tuesday when they opened the doors of the 16,000-ton element for a thorough survey and inspection.

Element two is scheduled for placement in mid-November.

The remaining elements (11 total) will continue to be placed from the Portsmouth side moving eastward across the Elizabeth River at a rate of approximately one every five weeks.

The new tunnel is expected to be complete in December 2016.
