Virginia Beach, Va. – Every Friday, Angela Spruill has a routine. She buys a cup of coffee and a Virginia Lottery ticket – and then she buys a cup of coffee for a stranger. Sometimes the stranger doesn’t even know who bought it.
“I just hope to give someone a better day,” she said.
Call it Karma; call it luck: One of those weekly Lottery tickets won $1 million.
She bought the winning Virginia’s $5 Million Club ticket at Farm Fresh, 1615 General Booth Boulevard in Virginia Beach.
She had the choice of taking the full $1 million over 25 years or a one-time cash option of $642,000 before taxes. She chose the cash option. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
As if that’s not enough, in February of 2012, she won $150,000 in the Virginia Lottery Black Scratcher game, with a ticket she bought at the same store.
Virginia’s $5 Million Club is a unique game for the Virginia Lottery because $1 million is actually the second prize. The game’s top prize is $5 million. Ms. Spruill is the game’s eighth $1 million winner, which means two million-dollar tickets remain unclaimed. Four $5 million tickets have been claimed, leaving one top-prize ticket unclaimed.
