Soldier peacefully surrenders after barricading himself on Fort Eustis

UPDATE: The soldier peacefully surrendered at around midnight, according to a base spokesman. He will be both physically and mentally evaluated.

Fort Eustis – A man has barricaded himself inside his home on Fort Eustis, but is not considered a threat to the base, according to base officials.

The man is an active duty solider in the Army assigned to Fort Eustis. The incident started at around 8:15 pm.

The man locked himself inside his home. When his wife was unable to get inside she reported it to base MPs, according to a base spokesman.

The MP’s who responded found the man barricaded inside. It is not known if he is armed.

No shots have been fired, and the man is alone.

Newport News police say they were informed of the incident by base officials and were told they were not needed.
