(CNN) — Twelve days after making a distress call from his sailboat and then disappearing in the waters south of Hawaii, 67-year-old Ron Ingraham gave it one more try.
His life depended on it.
The U.S. Coast Guard heard his latest mayday call and found Ingraham about 64 miles south of Honolulu on Tuesday.
The USS Paul Hamilton was just 14 miles away and found the “weak, hungry and dehydrated” sailor a short time later.
Ingraham is expected to arrive in port on Wednesday, after being transferred to a Coast Guard cutter.
He first issued distress calls when his boat began taking on water on November 27, but a 12,000-square-mile search failed to spot the 25-foot sailboat and the Coast Guard called off the effort four days later.
