UPDATE: The James River Bridge is now open, according to VDOT.
The James River Bridge is stuck open, according to James River Bridge officials.
All traffic is stopped in both directions at the James River Bridge, VDOT tells NewsChannel 3. After this morning’s bridge lift, the bridge did not seat properly, stopping several inches away from its proper position.
Crews are working through their maintenance protocols, trying to fix it as quickly as possible. VDOT says drivers should use I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternate route.
The incident is expected to be resolved around 8 a.m.
The cause is not yet clear, however, crews believe it may be due to the low temperatures.
