Meet Beachbot, a robot created by Disney Research and a student team at ETH Zurich that can draw giant pictures on the beach all on its own.
The robot ‘draws’ with a controllable rake at the rear that has individually controllable pins that can be raised and lowered to create thick or thin lines in the sand.
Beachbot moves on innovative balloon wheels that allow it to drive on the sand without leaving any tracks.
The drawing area is defined by planting poles in the sand, and Beachbot maps its position relative to the poles.
Artwork can be pre-programmed into the robot, or an artist can take over via remote control and draw manually.
