Community gathers in Norfolk to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Norfolk, Va. - The City of Norfolk is hosting two days of free events to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Now more than ever, our city must come together and embrace the message of Dr. King,” said Councilman Paul Riddick. “Whether you walk with us or reach out to your neighbor, I hope you show love, find understanding and unite as a community not only on this day but everyday throughout the year.”

On Sunday, January 18, 2015 the City of Norfolk and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra held a free concert, “Songs for a Dreamer: A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” at 7:00 p.m. at Calvary Revival Church. The concert featured orchestral music inspired by the African-American experience and/or written by African-American composers.

Today, Monday, January 19, 2015, the City of Norfolk in partnership with the Garden of Prayer Church is hosting the annual march and ceremony.

The walk began at 9:30 a.m. at the Garden of Prayer Worship Center, and moved south to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial located at the intersection of Brambleton Avenue and Church Street.

The ceremony took place at the monument from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
