Newport News, Va. – A Newport News man is charged with assault on a family member, according to police.

At about 7:50 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2015, police responded to a report of a domestic assault in the first block of Malbon Avenue.

When officers arrived, they were told that the suspect was intoxicated, had physically assaulted a 47-year-old female family member, and was armed with a firearm.

The suspect refused to come out of the home. At about 8:10 p.m., the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU) was requested to respond.

As the TOU team was deploying to the home, police say the first responding officers were able to convince the suspect to come out of the residence.

He was taken into custody about 9:00 p.m. without further incident and charged with one count each of assault on a family member and brandishing a firearm. He was placed in the custody of the Newport News City Jail.

The victim did not require immediate medical attention.

The suspect is identified as 50-year-old Jeffrey James Kilgore, of the residence.
