Crews search for missing 75-year-old boater in the James River

Isle of Wight County, Va. – Multiple agencies are searching the James River for a missing 75-year-old boater.

The man, identified as William Johnson, was last seen at 5:30 p.m. on Monday departing from the Tyler’s Beach boat harbor in Isle of Wight County. At 9:30 p.m., his capsized boat was discovered in the river.

Johnson is believed to have been checking his fishing nets at the time of the incident.

The search was delayed Monday night because of weather conditions. Recovery efforts will resumed Tuesday.

Multiple agencies are involved in the search, including the U. S. Coast Guard Helo Unit, the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office, the Rushmere Volunteer Fire Department, the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, and the Smithfield Police Department.
