Hampton, Va. - Police are now conducting an investigation after a 2-year-old girl was killed in Hampton.

Police say this happened on January 28, 2015. At around 7:04 a.m., emergency crews received a call and went to the scene which was in the 2000 block of Seldendale Drive. They were told that a 2-year-old baby girl was unresponsive.

Rescue crews went to the home and took the baby to the hospital where she was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Police opened a death investigation and are now calling this a homicide. They say the baby died as a result of trauma. They've identified the victim as Brianna Sandy.

Friday, Hampton police arrested 32-year-old Jeffrey Allan Brown in connection to the death.  According to police, Brown was dating Brianna's mom and the two lived together.

According to a criminal complaint filed in court, Brown told investigators that he was sitting on the recliner when the victim vomited.  The report goes on to say he threw the victim to the floor and stomped her in the abdomen causing internal injuries.

Brown has been charged with Second-Degree Murder and  Child Neglect.  He's currently in the Hampton City Jail.

Police say the victim's mom was home when the incident happened, but she tells NewsChannel 3 that's not the case.  She says her daughter was sick when she got home Tuesday night and she thought it was the flu.  She says she had planned to take her to the pediatrician in the morning, but never got the chance.

Brianna stopped breathing Wednesday morning and was pronounced dead an hour later.
