Norfolk, Va. - Rivalry was the word of the day over at Norfolk State University as both the men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted their regional rivals, the Hampton University Pirates, in an eventful double header.
The women’s game tipped off at 4:00 p.m. and the game was pretty neck and neck throughout, with the ladies heading into the locker room. Pirates up 38 to 35.
The second half was another battle all coming down to the last few seconds. And they just didn’t want it to end. The girls went into overtime tied at 65. It was back and forth from there but some crucial foul shots put Norfolk State ahead.
The Spartans break a 17 game losing streak and beat Hampton 71-66.
The rivalry continued when the men took the court at 6:00 p.m. The Spartans got out to as much as a 9 point lead, but the pirates snapped it within 2, score 33-31.
Norfolk state comes out with a win, 63-60 over their regional rivals.
