Newport News, Va. - A moped driver has died after police say he was hit by a vehicle on Wednesday evening.

Calls came a little after 6 p.m. about the incident. They say it happened at 48th Street and Roanoke Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found the 27-year-old Michael Torelle Patterson of the first block of Fields Drive in Hampton. He was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

They say a woman was driving a Volvo northbound on Roanoke Avenue.

Another vehicle stopped at the stop sign at the intersection and Patterson went around the stopped vehicle and into the intersection.

Police say that's when he was hit. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

This accident is still under investigation.
