California – A California woman called her local health department after finding a whole raccoon being sold at a meat market.
The story has gone viral on Facebook and has many people talking about the issue. One post on Facebook said, “People have been eating raccoons for hundreds of years. If you didn’t have access to a store or have a farm back a few generations you had to hunt your food.”
Another response stated, “Not a food group for me but in December, as we drove through Mississippi, we saw a sign that said “Fresh Raccoon for your Christmas dinner.” We almost got one and took it to my sister.”
The health department is now investigating if the store can sell whole raccoons or not. But they say it could be perfectly legal. The meat market is putting raccoons for sell on hold right now until the health department approves of this.
