Norfolk, Va. (WTKR) – Cold weather is likely to blame for an issue that kept the Berkley Bridge stuck open following a bridge lift Monday morning.
“We discovered that there were 3 switches that had problems – most likely due to the cold temperatures – as soon as the technicians identified the problems – they were able to switch out those switches,” Paula Miller with VDOT’s Hampton Roads District told NewsChannel 3’s Todd Corillo Monday.
Miller said once the problem was identified, technicians were able to repair the switches within 32 minutes.
There was also a similar problem at the James River Bridge.
“For 9 minutes this morning there was an issue at the JRB as well – it did not seat properly. So they brought it back up and put it right back down and there wasn’t a problem when they brought it back down,” Miller stated.
Extremely cold temperatures were likely to blame to the problems and Miller said the same problems can happen during very hot weather as well.
