Norfolk, Va. – While the USS Gunston Hall was going through a maintenance availability, a fire erupted on the amphibious dock landing ship.

This happened at around 2 p.m. at the NASSCO/Earl Industries shipyard in Portsmouth.

Officials say the fire started in an unmanned storeroom below the main deck. The ship’s in-port emergency fire team responded as well as the Portsmouth Fire Department.

One Navy firefighter experienced a minor smoke inhalation injury but he has since then returned to duty.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
