INDIANAPOLIS — A World War II veteran’s widow was shocked after being contacted recently by a Veterans Affairs officer.
Catherine Wallace’s husband, James, fought in the D-Day battle at Normandy.
He often shared stories with his family about surviving the Allied victory that liberated France 70 years ago.
James Wallace, who died in 1997, lost his metal Army dog tag ID in the sands of the French Beach.
They were recently found there by a French citizen who worked hard to return them to the soldier’s family in the U.S.
The Veterans Affairs officer who tracked down the Wallace family called him a true hero.
“He also sent a bag of sand that he dug up where he found the dog tag near Utah Beach,” Veterans Affairs officer Cory Goodwin said.
“If nothing ever happens to me again this will be the most wonderful thing that has happened to me,” Catherine Wallace said.
Family members say it’s a true miracle that the man who found the military ID didn’t keep the valuable relic.
