Wanchese, N.C. – Nine horses have been seized due to neglect in Dare County, according to the Outer Banks SPCA.

In late January, Dare County Animal Services and volunteers from United States Equine Rescue League removed nine horses from the property of Carla and Jim Gallop in Wanchese, North Carolina. The move comes after lengthy investigation sparked by numerous complaints about the horses’ health and living conditions, officials tell NewsChannel 3.

United States Equine Rescue League (USERL) investigators and volunteers are assisting the Outer Banks SPCA in providing care for the horses in an undisclosed location.

Many of the horses are emaciated, with body condition scores well below ideal levels, NewsChannel 3 has learned. It is estimated that it will take about four to six months for the horses to regain their health.

The court date is set for early March to determine the future of these neglected animals.

Rescue Organizations and private citizens wanting to assist are encouraged to contact USERL or Outer Banks SPCA.
