New Kent Co., Va. – A fatal crash that occurred Wednesday morning on I-64 in New Kent County is under investigation.

Virginia State Police troopers were called to the scene at 9:22 a.m. on Wednesday. The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of the interstate at Exit 211.

Three passenger vehicles and two tractor-trailers were involved.

Police say the accident occurred when traffic had slowed due to a disabled vehicle. As a tractor-trailer approached the slowed traffic, it hit a pickup truck in the right lane, causing it to spin and hit a van. The pickup then ran off the shoulder and the van collided with the tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer then hit a Chevrolet work truck. The tractor-trailer then hit a car, pushing it into another tractor-trailer.

The driver of the vehicle crushed between the two tractor trailers died at the scene.  She has been identified as 43-year-old Jennifer P. Wilson of Richmond.

The driver of the work truck was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. No other drivers were injured.

The driver of the initial tractor-trailer, 39-year-old Ira D. Vestal, of Conover, NC was charged with reckless driving.

The State Police Motor Carrier Safety Team and Crash Reconstruction Team are assisting with the crash investigation. Cause of the crash remains under investigation.
