Virginia Beach, Va - Tuesday night's vote gave the Virginia Beach School Board the go-ahead to ask the city council for more than $20 million dollars in funding.

Asking City Council for the additional money has been a highly debated topic the last few meetings, but a 9-2 vote during the March 17th meeting has taken the decision out of the board's hand.

"It's up to City Council if they are going to fund us that additional money," explained Beverly Anderson, Vice-Chair of the Virginia Beach School Board. "They may chose to do so and it's also up to them how they choose to fund that money."

A portion of the $20.3 million would go towards a raise for teachers. Although it is a lot of money to ask for, Anderson feels good about the board's chances.

"I'm confident that they will give us some money. I don't know that they will give the $20.3 million, but I am hoping and keeping my fingers crossed that they will give us the amount we are asking for."

A date has not yet been set for the School Board to go in front of the City Council.
