Newport News, Va. - Newport News police initiated a community-based crime control planning process over the weekend.

The C.R.I.M.E, or Crime Reduction through Informed (Community) Members Engaging, Planning Process was held at the First Baptist Church on 12716 Warwick Boulevard. The session started at 9 a.m. and ended around 12 p.m.

The gathering on Saturday kicked off a six month series of meetings between the community and police. Officials hope the meetings will nurture a partnership with the community they serve, and hope the plans and visions of a safer environment become a reality.

Chief Richard Myers and other City Officials are extending an invitation to citizens, business members and others who want to contribute to a safer Newport News.
