Norfolk, Va. – A vehicle accident closed the Midtown Tunnel in both directions on Wednesday after officials say fuel leaked onto the roadway.

Norfolk Police say the call came in at 2:48 p.m. reporting the crash. It involved a car and a tractor-trailer.

Crews say they closed the tunnel to allow for the safe removal and clean-up of the spilled fuel.

Those who tried to use the Route 58 Midtown Tunnel while traffic was stopped between 2:48 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. will not be expected to pay a toll.

If you were charged during this time, please be sure to call Elizabeth River Tunnels to have these charges reversed.
