Newport News - An attempted robbery turned deadly in Newport News Sunday morning.

According to Police, Kadeem Hutchins, 23, knocked on the door of Lemel Mitchell's home early Sunday morning. When Mitchell, 47, opened the door, police say he and Hutchins got into a fight and Mitchell was stabbed.

"It's crazy that you cant even open your doors anymore, you have to feel unsafe in your own home," said Leshawn Teasley, a friend of Mitchell.

Police say they received a 911 call from the home in the 2000 block of Chestnut Avenue around midnight. During the call they say they could hear a man screaming in the background. When they arrived at the home they found Mitchell laying in the entry way. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends and family gathered Tuesday night outside of the Mitchell's home for a vigil. For some, its hard to process what happened to Mitchell, especially since friends say the two men knew each other. They say a few weeks ago Hutchins passed out near the store Mitchell worked at.

"Lemeo put him into this chair right here and put water on him. And called the ambulance for him. That was the same man who stabbed him and took his life," explained Ammari Mohammed, a friend and co-worker of Mitchell.

Police arrested Hutchins in the 800 block of 14th Street in Newport News that afternoon.  He is charged with murder, using a knife during a felony and attempted robbery. Hutchins is in the custody of the Newport News Sheriff's Office.
