Emporia, Va. – Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal shooting involving a Greensville County Sheriff’s deputy and a Virginia State Police trooper.
According to VSP, around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, troopers responded to assist the Greensville County Sheriff’s Office with serving an Emergency Custody Order for a person at a home in the 200 block of Elm Road.
When the troopers arrived on scene, a man was outside the home and in possession of a sawed-off shotgun.
When the man refused to comply with law enforcement’s commands to surrender the gun, Virginia State Police dispatched negotiators to the scene to assit.
Just before 10:00 p.m., State Police used a diversionary device to try and compel the man to comply and drop the weapon. It was then that the man fired the gun at the officers.
A state trooper and a Greensville County Sheriff’s deputy returned fire.
First aid was immediately rendered to the man. He was taken to Southern Virginia Regional Hospital in Emporia where he later died. His remains were taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond for examination and autopsy.
The man has now been identified as Jeffery O. Adkins, 53.
The investigation remains ongoing at this time.
