Norfolk, Va. – The Virginia Zoo has announced that the name chosen for the nearly two-month-old zebra foal is Emilie.
Members of the community suggested names on the zoo’s website up until May 22nd. There were more than 2,500 names submitted. After that, the top names were voted on by zoo staff.
Emilie captured the majority of the votes while there was a three-way tie for second between Aida, Amelia and Ellie.
The winner who submitted Emilie was selected at random and will receive a $200 Zoo gift shop shopping spree.
“I’d like to thank the community for submitting names and participating in this contest. It has been really fun to see all of the creative name suggestions for our baby.” said Greg Bockheim, the Zoo’s executive director. “I’m happy to know that the Zoo and our baby zebra have so many fans.”
The baby zebra was born on May 13th to mother Abbey and father Zack. They can all be visited in the Zoo’s Africa – Okavango Delta exhibit.
