Virginia Beach, Va. - The summer carnival at Mount Trashmore will be closing at 8:30 pm each night, earlier than the normal 11 pm closing, because of worry about public safety.
The decision comes after police broke up several fights and gunshots were fired into the air last weekend. This week, they're hoping for a safer weekend with more officers and reduced hours.
On Friday night, there were many officers at the carnival, but it wasn't very crowded.
"It's quiet. You can tell something did happen because there's no one here," said Erica Maxwell, who was at the carnival with her daughter.
Many people we spoke with at the carnival were not worried about any repeat violence. "You gonna stop living your life because of what other people do? You can't live like that," said Anthony Carter, who was there with his kids. "You got police walking, patrolling the area. Have a good time. Bring your kids out and enjoy yourself."
Still, others outside of the carnival weren't sure if they'd go back. "I really can't tell you yes or no because it's the first time it's ever happened and when they start shooting, stray bullets can hit anyone," said Tommy Jackson.
The city hasn't decided when or if regular hours will return. The carnival runs through June 23.
