Virginia Beach, Va. - A fire in Virginia Beach forced six people out of their homes in the middle of the night.

The flames started in the back of a townhouse on Alder Circle, the heat causing almost all of the windows on the second floor to burst.

Investigators say heavy smoke spread to two other units, damaging those as well. Everyone made it out safely, thanks to a neighbor. Samantha Kirby says she was sitting on the hood of her car when she smelled the smoke and took action.

"The whole window was engulfed -- so we went door to door waking up the neighbors, you know late at night everybody's going to sleep."

The family who lives in the home where the fire started lost their cat. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
