Virginia Beach, Va. (WTKR) - Work is progressing at the Cavalier Hotel property at the Oceanfront.
In an update provided to the Virginia Beach City Council, City Manager Jim Spore writes "The Cavalier Historic Hotel and Oceanfront Hotel development has been moving forward since late spring 2014 and has made significant progress."
All site plans for 82 homes to be built adjacent to the Historic Hotel site have been approved.
The renovation to the Historic Cavalier is well underway, with all interior hotel elements to be replaced removed.
That includes walls, floors, heating and air conditioning, electrical systems, furniture and equipment.
Renovations to the hotel are expected to take about a year.
Plans to add a distillery will go before the City Council in July.
The first home to be built on the property, at the intersection of Cavalier Drive and Atlantic Avenue, is expected to be completed in August.
That home will serve as a model.
Demolition of the former Oceanfront Hotel is nearly complete.
In the first phase of improvements to that site, a 300-room Marriot Hotel is expected to open in 2017.
