Portsmouth, Va. - A woman was injured and her puppy killed when someone shot into her Portsmouth home.
It happened on Lanier Crescent around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 21.
There were about five bullets that hit the home. One of them went through a front window, hitting Christine Tevis on the other side.
The bullet tore up her hand.
"It took a big chunk of my skin out, right around the knuckles," Tevis told NewsChannel 3.
That same bullet also hit her 11-month-old Rat Terrier puppy named 'Baby' in the head, killing her.
The loss has been tough to take.
"I feel like I lost my best friend when the puppy died," Tevis said.
After seeing all the damage in her house, including bullet holes in her wall, window and freezer, Tevis says she's glad it wasn't even worse.
"I feel lucky to be alive. The way I see it, if I hadn't been holding that puppy, would that bullet be inside me? Would I be dead now? I consider Baby a hero because I feel she saved my life."
Tevis says she doesn't know why someone shot at her house.
Police don't have any suspects right now.
