Norfolk, Va. - A 36-year-old man is in the hospital after police say his 13-year-old stepson stabbed him.

Emergency officials received calls just after 2:30 p.m. about the incident. Police say this happened in the 2900 block of Somme Avenue.

The boy’s mother, Raushanah Appling, says the man is her husband. She says he provoked one of her sons as he tried to take an Xbox away.

The police took her 13-year-old son into custody, but she says she’s not sure which one of her sons is responsible for the stabbing.

“I didn’t see who did it and they just took my baby like that, and I don’t know who did it. I have two different children saying they did it.”

Appling describes the scene as chaotic.

“My son was screaming, 'Dad is bleeding, dad got cut, dad got cut,” said Appling. “Everyone is screaming and I’m not figuring out what’s going on. I grab my husband. I’m looking at him. I lift his shirt up and I just see the cut.”

Once police arrived on scene, they took the man to the hospital for treatment.

Appling says that her husband is dealing with mental illness. She says that combined with alcohol contributed to the incident.

She says her husband is doing much better and he is now aware and talking saying he loves the kids.

But this mother and wife is torn in the middle.

“It hurts so much because I love them both.”
