Kitchen electrical problem causes fire in Newport News home

Newport News, Va. – A Newport News home fire Tuesday afternoon was ruled accidental after investigation revealed it was caused by an electrical problem in the kitchen.

Officials received a call at 3:32 PM about a fire reported in the 900 block of 16th Street in the East End section of the city.

Crews arrived minutes later and found smoke coming from the roof. The fire was contained within 20 minutes.

The damage is estimated to be around $15,000. The home has been condemned, and Virginia Power was called to the scene to pull the meter.

No one was injured.
