Newport News, Va. - “It`s like the voice of a child. It`s hard to explain. It`s like a voice from hell seriously.”
Donald Boone will never forget the screams of a 54-year-old woman he found naked outside his home on 32nd street in Newport News last month.
Boone found her moments after she was raped.
Police say the person responsible for the crime was Jim Johnson.
The 27-year-old was arrested Wednesday after police say an anonymous tip led them to his Girlfriend's house.
But police knew who Johnson was weeks before the arrest according to a criminal complaint.
They were looking for a red scooter that Boone spotted immediately that June night.
“She was hiding behind the right truck back there trying to get her clothes back on, and he was trying to come back around and come back and try to find his helmet,” recalls Boone. “I couldn't see his face because like I said, I was walking that way but that motorcycle is what gave you away, and you came back to get your helmet and I spotted that.”
According to the criminal complaint, officers found Johnson on that red scooter the same morning. They questioned him but let him go.
Court documents say police pulled up Johnson's picture in a photo line-up later that day and the victim said that was him.
The criminal complaint says she told police she tried to fight back , but he pulled her pants off and threatened to kill her if she didn't have sex with him saying "I have a gun.”
Boone says she was terrified when retelling the story to him and police that night.
“She told me he grabbed her by the mouth and dragged her by the woods and tried to rape her and stuff,” says Boone. “I got a mother. I got sisters. I got an aunt. The only thing it was like for me is what I would like to see down here be a better place.”
We asked Johnson if he wanted to tell his story from jail but he said no.
He will be back in court next month.
