Virginia Beach, Va. – Sheriff’s deputies started a new more aggressive effort to catch weekend inmates attempting to sneak things into the jail.
It’s called “Operation Candy Crush,” named after the sheriff K-9 used to inspect inmates as they enter on Fridays.
Weekend sentences are for inmates convicted of minor crimes, like shoplifting or DUI. If the inmates are caught with any contraband, they must become regular inmates. The K-9 also sniffs them for any traces of alcohol or drugs.
“It’s pretty serious when you come into jail and you’re under the influence of alcohol. It shows a huge disrespect for the break that the judge gave you,” said Sheriff Ken Stolle.
On Friday night, 18 inmates were found to be in violation.
