Kitty Hawk, N.C. – Replenishment of a dune that washed away during a coastal storm in early May has been completed.

The replenishment efforts shut down a portion of N.C. 12 in Kitty Hawk to thru traffic in early July so the dune could be rebuilt.

The storm in early May washed out about 500 feet of dune and 200 feet of pavement near Milepost 4.

Crews were able to rebuild and reopen the road shortly after, but were only able to make temporary repairs to the dune to protect the road.

Once the necessary permits were obtained, the entire dune could be rebuilt.

Now that the dune work is complete, crews need to pave the road before it can be reopened. It's expected that the road should be reopened by the end of the week.

Summer Copeland, the general manager of Black Pelican, says for the last several weeks, they've heard complaints from customers.

"The customers do call and they complain saying they can't get here. I don't think they realize we have another main bypass that we have access to as well," says Copeland.
