Dare County, N.C. – An Elizabeth City woman was killed when the car she was riding in was hit on the Wright Memorial Bridge near Kitty Hawk.
The crash was reported at 1:13 a.m. on Saturday, August 15.
According to Sgt. White with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the victim was 35-year-old Manisha Coleman.
White says Coleman was in a car driven by Erik Overton, 24, of Hertford.
They were heading northbound toward Virginia when the T-top on his car flew off, so Coleman stopped to retrieve it.
While the car was stopped, another vehicle hit it from behind.
Coleman was ejected from the car and died.
Overton ended up in the water below the bridge, but it’s unclear if he jumped or fell in. According to White, Overton was not hit by a car and could not remember what happened.
He was pulled out by the Currituck County EMS Water Rescue and taken to a hospital but was released with no injuries.
The other vehicle had four people inside including the driver, who is from Georgia. All of them were taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The investigation is still ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time.
