The 2016 race for the presidential nomination got a bit more interesting this week.

A candidate calling themselves, “Deez Nuts,” filed paperwork Sunday with the Federal Election Commission to run for President, CBS News reported, joining more than 500 other random contenders — all who have the legal right to run for the presidency.

It turns out, “Deez Nuts,” who is running as an independent,” is faring shockingly well in the state of North Carolina, grabbing up 9 percent of likely voters, according to Public Policy Polling numbers released Wednesday. The poll surveyed 957 North Carolina voters from August 12-15th.

That 9 percent puts him even with Marco Rubio and ahead of Mike Huckabee at 6%, Rand Paul at 3%, and Chris Christie and Rick Santorum at 2%.

He also claimed the support of 8 percent of likely voters in Minnesota and 7 percent in of likely voters in Iowa.

The Daily Beast claims to have tracked down the person behind “Deez Nuts,” and has identified him as 15-year-old Brady Olson from Wallingford, Iowa.

“When I heard about the Limberbutt McCubbins story, I realized I could,” Brady Olson, aka “Deez Nuts” told The Daily Beast, referring to another candidate identified as a a cat from Kentucky.

“The next step is to get some party nominations, like the Minnesota Independence Party or the Modern Whig Party. It would also be great to find a VP, preferably McCubbins because the Nuts/McCubbins ticket sounds amazing.”

At least 512 people have formally filed a statement of candidacy for the 2016 presidential election with the Federal Election Commission, according to CBS News.
