GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. — A 15-year-old boy was apparently bitten by a shark while swimming in the ocean near Murrells Inlet, authorities confirmed to WMBF.

The boy had bite marks that appeared to be from a small shark on his leg and another on his hand from when he tried to get the shark off, Capt. Jerry Howerton with Murrells Inlet Garden City Fire Rescue told the station.

The boy was in chest-deep water at the time of the incident.

Authorities said the attack happened near the 1600 block of S. Waccamaw Drive, Murrells Inlet.
