Virginia Beach, Va. (WTKR) - Thousands of students in Virginia Beach headed back to school Tuesday.

NewsChannel 3 was at John B. Dey Elementary on N. Great Neck Road as the first day of classes got underway.

As the students arrived by bus, car and on foot, many expressed enthusiasm for a new year ahead.

"I'm really excited, but a little nervous," 2nd grade student Davis Steadman admitted to NewsChannel 3's Todd Corillo.

When asked what she was most excited about this year, 5th grade student Lizzy Goldstein said "getting to know my teacher a lot better and more math!"

SCA President Levi Sicre admitted he was a little bummed that summer was over, but is looking forward to learning more this year, especially in social studies.

"Learning about different things like explorers," he said.

Principal Beth Bianchi oversaw the orchestrated dance that is the first day of school with a big smile on her face.

"We get to start fresh, start new things, try new things, make things better, change it up, so it’s really exciting!"

Students at John B. Dey got help navigating on the first day of school from soldiers at Fort Story, who have volunteered at the school for 19 consecutive years.
