Edenton, N.C. - Ten dollars.

That's how much parents will have to pay if their child isn't wearing a helmet while riding a bike in Edenton, NC.

It's a new effort by Police Chief Jay Fortenbery to keep kids safe.

He and his officers will be issuing ten dollar citations anytime a child under 16  is riding a bike and not wearing a helmet.

If it happens again, there will be another ten dollar fine. It will then be a state violation.

And the parents will be paying.

"It's the parents' responsibility. In North Carolina, law requires parents to provide the help. The parents are responsible for them wearing it. It's not the kids' fault," Chief Fortenbery said.

Before, the department provided helmet safety seminars, gave away free gear and issued warning tickets.

But now, parents will have to pay up.
