Newport News, Va. - A long-awaited project is finally underway to widen Interstate 64 from Newport News to Williamsburg.
Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation began working on the first segment of the project Sunday night. That segment goes from Jefferson Ave. to Yorktown Rd.
An additional travel lane and shoulder lane will be added in both directions making the road three lanes instead of two.
This week, crews are doing milling and paving work in the existing shoulder lane eastbound between Fort Eustis Blvd. and Jefferson Ave.
While that work is taking place, the right lane will be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Thursday, Sept. 17.
Expect additional lane closures in other areas as the work progresses.
The first segment is expected to be complete in December 2017.
