If you've got an old fridge or freezer sitting around, you can now get paid to recycle it through Dominion Virginia Power's new appliance recycling program.

If you qualify, someone will come pick up your appliance at no cost and you'll get $50 as an incentive for participating.

It's an effort to reduce energy usage and lower power bills.

"These older refrigerators are not as efficient as the newer models.  They can run upwards of a $100 more a year on your energy bill," said Daisy Pridgen with Dominion Virginia Power.

To qualify, your refrigerator or freezer must:

  • be at least 10 years old
  • range from 10 to 32 cubic feet
  • be operational and empty at the time of pick-up

You can enroll on Dominion's website or by calling 1-844-685-7462.

After the fridge or freezer is picked up, it will be recycled by Dominion's contractor, JACO Environmental.

"It'll be completely dismantled.  95 percent of this refrigerator will actually be processed and those materials will enter back in the manufacturing stream," said Justin Rainer with JACO.
