Newport News, Va. – A Walgreens Pharmacy in Newport News had to be evacuated on Thursday afternoon after a compactor fire caused the building to fill with smoke.
Firefighters were called out to the location at the intersection of Denbigh Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue at around 2:19 p.m.
When they arrived, they found a compactor unit and dumpster connected to it on fire in the back of the store.
Smoke from the fire started to fill the store and that’s when the building had to be evacuated.
After crews put the fire out, they remained on the scene to clear smoke from the inside of the store.
The fire was caused from a welding operation on the dumpster unit that was attached to the compactor unit.
The fire has been ruled accidental.
No injuries have been reported.
