Parts of Chesapeake Blvd. were closed due to down power lines

UPDATE: Norfolk Police advise that Chesapeake Boulevard has reopened for all normal traffic.

Norfolk, Va. – Portions of Chesapeake Boulevard have been closed, according to officials.

When wind comes in off the water, it brings grit and dirt that sits on the conductor,” said Dan Genest with Dominion Virginia Power. “This grit mixes with the rain water creating a heavy mixture that ignites fire when met with electricity. This caused both Chesapeake Boulevard to lose service this morning and Larchmont & ODU last night.”

Chesapeake Boulevard will remained closed until crews can replace the pole.

At 9:45 a.m., 1,400 customers were out of power and 807 people will be out of power until the pole is replaced.

Residences off of Hampton Boulevard, including the Larchmont & ODU areas, were fully restored at 2:00 a.m..

Overall, the incident affected about 2,600 customers.
