Toano, Va. - An elderly man and woman died due to an alleged murder-suicide on Thursday.

It happened in the 9100 block of Richmond Road.

Police received a call around 9:30 a.m. after a family member stopped by the home and found the couple, who died from gunshot wounds.

Investigators say they believe that 79-year-old James Edward Kite shot his wife, 77-year-old Audrey Lily Boyle, in the kitchen area of the home and then went outside and shot himself.

The wife allegedly told coworkers that her husband threatened to shoot her in the past.

"It's very sad. Family and friends gathered and obviously it's difficult time for them, so our thoughts and prayers are with the family," said James City County Deputy Sheriff Steve Rubio.

Police say a neighbor heard gunshots at 6 a.m. and that there were several guns in the house. Neighbors told police that James liked to hunt.

First responders had been called to the house because James suffers from medical problems, according to police.

They call this case sad.

"Anytime there's a scene like that is dramatic and it's difficult to see, said Deputy Rubio.

When Boyle didn't show up for work today, her coworker stopped by her house and learned of the tragedy.

He told us that she worked for a carpet store for over 20 years and that her coworkers were devastated by the news.

"I don't think it's right if you want to commit suicide. You shouldn't take nobody with you, that's your own business," said neighbor David Austin. "Nobody should take their life, life is too precious."

Both bodies were taken to the Medical Examiner's Office in Richmond as this investigation continues.
