Newport News, Va.- Huntington Ingalls Industries announced Thuesday that Newport News Shipbuilding has converted to natural gas. The shipyard has found an alternative that’s not only efficient but cost effective.

The conversion to natural gas will allow Huntington to save millions and facilitate better services. The old system that burned about 6 million gallons of heavy oil was a hit on the shipyard’s pocket, costing them millions. The new system will not only save on cost but reduce gases by 30 percent.

“Not only does the conversion to natural gas make good business sense, it’s more efficient, it’s cleaner, and it’s easier to operate,” said Bill Cash-Robertson, a Newport News shipbuilding environment engineer.

Plant Engineering Supervisor Ken Allmon, said ” The team is proud of our work to overcome technical challenges and implement a solution that is a win for everybody.”
